The Mo-99 supply crisis is still making headline news. With the NRU reactor at Chalk River in Canada now unlikely to reopen until Spring of next year, and the High Flux Reactor in the Netherlands also scheduled to shut for up to six months in early 2010, there's an urgent need for action. With this in mind, the FRM II neutron source at the Technical University of Munich is seeking funding to upgrade the facility to make Mo-99. A feasibility study has shown that, assuming a mean annual uptime of 240 days, the reactor could produce approximately 65% of annual European requirements for Mo-99, or just over one-eighth of the current global demand.New Source on Medical Physics Web http://medicalphysicsweb.org/cws/article/research/40089 |
