BNMS Annual Spring Meeting

Review of the Conference

The BNMS Spring ASM held at the ICC Birmingham was an excellent way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the BNMS.

As well as the evolving masterclass format, with sessions this year devoted to head and neck , prostate and oesophageal malignancies as well as infection and inflammation imaging, providing an excellent framework for the educational sessions.  There were also parallel scientific sessions showcasing the breadth of the work going on in Nuclear Medicine in the UK.

The conference dinner was a particular highlight with Dr Keith Harding receiving the President’s medal and Sue Hatchard giving a very entertaining and memorable reflection of her extensive involvement with the BNMS and luckily not causing too many blushes. The Norman Veall medal was awarded to Steve Ebdon-Jackson, who has been a sensible voice within the regulatory process governing UK practice. Dr Mary Prescott received Honorary Membership.

The conference saw the launch of the first three titles of the pocket book series, as well as A History of Radionuclide Imaging in the UKsponsored by Siemens. All of which will soon be available as electronic versions, via the website ( for BNMS members.

The scientific and educational committeechairscompleted their term of office at Birmingham. Dr Jimmy Bomanji and Dr Gopi Gnanesagaran have developed the structure of the annual conference over the last few years and bought in a wealth of excellent speakers. Dr Stewart Redman and Dr Sabina DIzdarevic are taking on the baton and I look forward to seeing their ideas develop over the next few years.

Congratulations to all the prize winners from conference. There were a total of 7 scientific prizes awarded with sponsorship from the BNMS, National Physical Laboratory, Alliance Medical, Bayer and Hermes Medical Solutions, Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. The complete list is available on the website.

Finally I would like to thank our partners in industry for their ongoing enthusiasm. The commercial exhibition was once again, the hub of the event.  Their support is key to the conference's success and enables the annual meeting to offer a complete insight into the UK Nuclear Medicine community.

50th Anniversary Commemorative Book - Open Access

The BNMS, under the auspices of Professor Ralph McCready, Chief Editor, are publishing a 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book entitled "A History of Radionuclide Studies in the UK - 50th Anniversary of the British Nuclear Medicine Society"

Anniversary book

The book reflects the research of many of the pioneers in the use of radionuclides for the diagnosis and therapy of human disease. Since 1949 there have been remarkable advances in radionuclide techniques and imaging equipment: from the first devices “home-made” in the many physics departments throughout the UK, to the sophisticated multimodality imagers now in everyday use in Nuclear Medicine. The BNMS has been instrumental in promoting the use of radionuclide techniques in the investigation of pathology by supporting and providing education, research and guidelines on the optimum use of radiation to help patients.

The future of Nuclear Medicine is bright, thanks to improved imaging resolution, new radiopharmaceuticals, and new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and procedures.

The book is intended to act as a reference source for UK nuclear medicine and will be a commemorative gift for registered *delegates attending the BNMS Annual Spring Meeting, 17th - 19th April 2016 at the ICC in Birmingham

*Main conference delegates only
