The decision to produce this manifesto came out of discussions at BNMS council in 2022 where it was felt that the UK was falling behind in access to new (but not particularly novel) PET tracers or indications for their use that were hard or impossible to obtain in the UK but were more available in other comparable nations.

It was felt that the UK was falling behind comparatively in this important area of molecular imaging. This was particularly important given the theranostics revolution which is upon us where tracers are used to diagnose disease, check patient suitability for treatment and deliver molecular radiotherapy.

Position Statement

The IRPA is an international organisation that brings together professionals from all around the world who have an interest in radiation protection issues. Its membership is formed from the members of its associate societies in each country. In the UK the SRP is the IRPA’s associate society, and therefore members of the SRP are automatically members of the IRPA.

The SRP is the principal organisation in the UK for those working in radiation protection. It’s objectives are “to promote and advance the science and art of radiological protection and allied fields” which includes “health physics, radiation and nuclear medicine”. Members receive a regular newsletter.

The BNMS is a partner society of the SRP and we can nominate eligible members of the BNMS to become International Members of the SRP, and therefore also members of the IRPA. To be eligible you should have a degree or a “recognised scientific, technological or professional qualification” and be “regularly engaged in one or more appropriate aspects of radiation protection”, which includes “applied activities, research, education and training, or administrative and regulatory functions”.

The SRP has an International Committee that allows the SRP and its partner societies to cooperate with the IRPA.

The partner societies currently include the;

• Association of University Radiation Protection Officers
• British Institute of Radiology
• British Nuclear Medicine Society
• College of Radiographers
• Institute of Radiation Protection
• Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine
• Royal College of Radiologists.

Partner societies have a representation on this committee that depends on the number of their International Members.
