Supporting Excellence in Nuclear Medicine Reporting: The BNMS & SoR Standards Working Group

The joint working group between the Society of Radiographers (SoR) and the British Nuclear Medicine Society (BNMS) plays a key role in advancing standards for education, training, and preceptorship in nuclear medicine reporting.

Bringing together radiographers, technologists, clinical scientists, and medical practitioners, the group reflects the multidisciplinary nature of nuclear medicine. Representation also includes key partner organisations such as the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) and the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), ensuring alignment across the wider professional landscape.

The group’s focus is to support non-medical practitioners involved in clinical evaluation and technical reporting by promoting best practice and providing accessible learning opportunities. This includes developing online resources, delivering webinars and workshops, and contributing to national meetings such as the BNMS Spring Meeting.

Recently, the group delivered a successful series of webinars aimed at supporting reporting practitioners. Topics included improving accuracy in nuclear medicine, reporting in DEXA, and the implementation of REALM in nuclear medicine. These sessions were delivered by national experts in the field and provided practical insights to support high-quality reporting practice.

Looking ahead, the group’s next major project is to update the 2005 BNMS guidance on non-medical reporting in nuclear medicine. This work will be undertaken collaboratively with all key stakeholders to ensure the guidance reflects current practice, supports the evolving workforce, and aligns with modern standards in education and reporting.

Meeting regularly throughout the year, the group provides a collaborative forum to share expertise, address emerging challenges, and help shape the future of reporting practice in nuclear medicine. Through its work, the group aims to strengthen professional development pathways and support a consistent, high-quality approach to reporting across the UK.

By encouraging collaboration between organisations and disciplines, the BNMS & SoR Standards Working Group continues to support the workforce and contribute to improved patient care.
