Following on from the letter from BNMS to The Rt. Hon. Jeremy Hunt MP (see the letter here), read the response below:

Dear Dr Buscombe and Dr Mayes,

Thank you for your letter of 19 November regarding the potential registration of Nuclear Medicine Technologists. I am sorry for the delay in replying to you.

Your letter helpfully sets out the context around this issue. Unfortunately, the Committee is unlikely to have capacity in its programme to examine this specific question in detail. However, we are currently working on two inquiries which may be relevant.

You highlight potential workforce shortages in this specialist area, and our inquiry into workforce burnout and resilience in the NHS and social care is considering the numbers and projections that would be necessary for a resilient NHS workforce. Your point around the current limitations on autonomy for staff may have relevance to our joint inquiry with the Science and Technology Committee on lessons learnt from the coronavirus pandemic so far.

I will certainly bear the points you make in mind as the inquiries continue and we draw our conclusions. Once again, thank you for getting in touch.

Best wishes,
Jeremy Hunt
