Calling all NM doctors! Greetings from the NM Specialty Advisory Committee which leads on NMPhysician training and recruitment.
We have news! With the anticipated increase in demand for MRT services around the corner, we are delighted in having successfully obtained extrafunding for 10extraNMphysiciantraineeposts. We now have approved training sites in all the NHS England regions, with 2024 vacancies coming up in many regions
such as the NE, NW, Kent/Sussex and London.
We are therefore writing to ask for help from all doctors working in NM to actively engage
with medical students and doctors in early years of training to let them know what a rewarding career NM is and advise them how to apply. Most won't have even heard of Nuclear Medicine,
so we do need a lot to bring the specialty to their attention. The requirements are 2 years of internal medicine and MRCP, or equivalent from surgery or paediatric backgrounds. The training takes 6 years but results in dual CCT in
NM and Clinical Radiology. In terms of those looking for a good life:work balance it might be interesting for them to note that many NM consultants in larger
NM centres don't do on call after completing training.
Please can we encourage all to engage with medical students and juniors training in medicine, surgery or paeds at every opportunity, for example by engaging with them over NM referrals,
at MDTs, getting involved in their teaching programmes or giving them the opportunity to learn about NM by involving them in NM projects.
A great news. The evident surge in the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of NM, since 2000, needed to be backed by an expansion in the physician workforce. Finally, things are turning around.
