BNMS Committee Highlights Scientific & Education Committee (SEC)

Education and collaboration are at the heart of BNMS, and the Scientific and Education Committee (SEC) plays a vital role in shaping these across the nuclear medicine community.

What does the SEC do?

The SEC reports to the BNMS Council and provides strategic leadership on education and training for all professional groups within nuclear medicine, including clinicians, clinical scientists, radiopharmacists, technologists, radiographers and nurses.

A key responsibility of the Committee is the planning and delivery of the scientific programme for the BNMS Annual Spring Meeting. In addition, the SEC:

  • Oversees the BNMS annual educational programme, which includes webinars, study days and YouTube resources
  • Reviews and endorses regional meetings and external courses
  • Advises on education policy and training development across the UK

Through this work, the SEC helps ensure that BNMS members have access to high-quality, relevant education that supports both clinical practice and professional development.

SEC in action: BNMS Spring Meeting 2026
A major focus of the SEC’s work this year was the delivery of the 2026 Annual Spring Meeting in Manchester, which marked the 60th anniversary of the BNMS.

  • This landmark meeting brought together a truly multidisciplinary audience and featured.
  • The highest attendance in over two decades
  • A record number of abstract submissions
  • 129 invited speakers, including 18 international experts

For the first time, the programme expanded to five parallel educational streams, reflecting both demand and the breadth of modern nuclear medicine. The three-day programme included plenary lectures, proffered papers, posters (over 160 presentations), workshops, and interactive sessions. Highlights included:

  • International leadership and collaboration, with speakers such as Professor Stefano Fanti and contributions from global societies including SNMMI, EANM and WFNMB
  • Cutting-edge science, including advances in total body PET, CZT SPECT-CT, and molecular radiotherapy
  • Clinical innovation, from PSMA PET/CT in prostate cancer to developments in cardio-oncology and neuroimaging
  • Strong multidisciplinary engagement, with highly attended streams across medical physics, radiopharmacy, and RTN practice
  • Dedicated support for early-career professionals, showcasing emerging talent and research

Workshops such as the cardiac PET/SPECT session and the IDUG molecular radiotherapy workshop were fully subscribed, highlighting the demand for practical, skills-based education.

Importantly, the meeting emphasised the role of the entire multidisciplinary workforce, with patient-centred sessions and international perspectives on workforce development reinforcing the evolving nature of nuclear medicine practice.

The success of the meeting reflects the significant behind-the-scenes work of the SEC—from programme design and speaker selection to abstract review, session planning, and continuous quality improvement through feedback.

Looking ahead

The SEC is committed to building on this momentum. Key priorities include:

  • Expanding multidisciplinary and collaborative learning opportunities
  • Increasing engagement with trainees and early-career professionals
  • Continuing to develop the Spring Meeting to reflect rapid advances in technology, theranostics and clinical practice

Who is on the Committee?
The SEC is a multidisciplinary committee representing all BNMS professional groups, including clinicians, clinical scientists, radiopharmacists, radiographers, technologists, nurses and trainees. This ensures that the educational needs of the full nuclear medicine workforce are reflected in its work.

Members are appointed for a three-year term (renewable once) and are expected to actively contribute to meetings and ongoing projects.

How can you get involved?
The SEC welcomes applications from BNMS members who are passionate about education and the future of nuclear medicine.

Vacancies are advertised via BNMS communications, and appointments are made following review by the Committee and ratification by BNMS Council.

Being part of the SEC offers the opportunity to:

  • Shape national educational strategy
  • Contribute to the BNMS Spring Meeting
  • Work collaboratively across disciplines
  • Develop leadership experience and professional networks
